This Is Not An Ensō Tote

$30.91 AUD

René Magritte's "The Treachery of Images" presents the viewer with an image of a smoker's pipe and the factual statement "Ceci n'est pas une pipe": "This is not a pipe." It is just the image of a pipe, a rendering containing the idea of a pipe.

In Zen Buddhism, an ensō is a circle drawn an act of meditation. Each is a unique expression of the moment of its creation, and of the state of its creator at the time of drawing it. They are representative at once of both the beauty in the imperfection of all things and of the aim of transcendence of self.

But like Magritte's pipe, this image is treacherous. It is digitally created with a tool designed to merely seem like a brush, aided by a computationally perfect circle, distorted by hand after the fact to achieve artificial imperfection, and presented here in a format where it can be endlessly reproduced. It is an image of something like an ensō, accompanied with a caption that states the simple truth:

これは円相ではありません。

Kore wa ensō de wa arimasen.

This is not an ensō.

It is my hope that you will enjoy this tote and carry it in the spirit of appreciation of the art that inspired it.
